Now that I’ve belatedly embraced streaming I’ve watched a few very different comedies recently: The Family Pile (6 episodes, 2023) on ITVX; We Are Not Alone (3 episodes, 2022) on UKTV; and the first episode of the new Apple comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. Genre, style and (probably) target audience are all different but they all made me laugh. What makes you decide to watch a new sitcom and what makes you stick with it?
Word of mouth. There’s so much telly, I’m mostly led by recommendations, especially from those who know me and know that I like sitcoms with actual funny jokes in. I do make myself try new shows from time to time that just turn up, but I’m rarely pleasantly surprised.
I think you might be the only person who’s recommended any sitcoms to me in the last few years. I choose at random and hit the odd good one. Friday Night Dinner was a random pick on the channel 4 website and I loved it; most of the others we tried on there I was less impressed with (they do have the excellent Mr Don and Mr George available though, which I’m rewatching).
